Foster Carer Support Groups – a community that understands and uplifts

Fostering can be wonderfully rewarding and, at times, intensely isolating. Family and friends often care but don’t fully grasp the emotional weight of allegations, midnight anxiety, or celebrating a tiny breakthrough only you see. That is why Positive Aspirations runs regular, trauma-informed Support Groups: a confidential circle where people who get it listen, share, laugh and problem-solve together.


Why peer support matters

  • Validation & empathy – hearing “I’ve been there” lowers stress hormones and builds resilience.
  • Shared wisdom – practical tips on contact handovers, bedtime battles, tax returns.
  • Protective factor – research shows carers with strong peer networks are less likely to quit or burn out.
  • Celebration space – a safe forum to shout about GCSE passes, first football match or simply a tantrum-free day.

How the groups work

Online via ZoomAccessible to carers from all three Positive Aspirations agencies; camera-on culture encouraged, but off is okay if you’re comforting a toddler or cooking tea.
FrequencyCore mixed group monthly plus targeted groups (new carers, male carers, SPARK champions) scheduled termly. Dates published in the Newsletter and on the training portal.
ThemesSome sessions focus on hot topics (e.g., managing allegations, facilitating family time) with a guest specialist; others are open-forum check-ins.
FacilitationLed by an experienced SSW or Therapeutic Mentor who safeguards confidentiality and keeps discussion solution-focused.
ConfidentialityGroup agreement reviewed each meeting: what’s shared in the Zoom stays in the Zoom, unless it reveals a safeguarding concern.

What to expect when you join

  1. Quick round-table “How’s your week?” check-in.
  2. Celebration moment – bring a win, however small.
  3. Main topic or open floor.
  4. Resource swap: books, podcasts, SPARK ideas, local dentist that “gets” trauma-anxious kids.
  5. Closing grounding exercise – you leave calmer than you arrived.

Accessibility & inclusion

  • Captioning enabled; written resources emailed afterward.
  • Break-out rooms used if numbers are large or a sensitive sub-topic emerges.
  • Let the facilitator know if you need a 1-to-1 debrief post-session; they can arrange follow-up with the Therapeutic Mentor or your SSW.

Getting started

  • Ask your SSW for the next Zoom link and an onboarding leaflet.
  • Add sessions to your Personal Development Plan—attendance counts toward CPD hours.
  • Unsure or anxious? Join with camera off and just listen the first time; many carers do.
